Gorgias Press, a leading name among international academic publishers attending the “2026 Symposium Syriacum”

The American publisher Gorgias Press, a leading name among international academic publishers, has confirmed its participation in the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies, which the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization is organizing in partnership with the Romanian Academy and the Romanian Parliament at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest from August 3rd to 7th, 2026.

Founded in 2001, Gorgias Press is an independent academic publisher specializing in the publication of books and journals in the fields of history, foreign languages, and religious studies, with specific areas of expertise in the Ancient Near East, Arabic and Islamic Studies, archaeology, Biblical Studies, Classical Studies, Early Christianity, Jewish Studies, Linguistics and the Syriac language.

Originally founded by George and Christine Kiraz as a specialized publishing house to support their research interests, Gorgias Press soon became known for its scholarly publishing in the fields of linguistics, religion and, in particular, Syriac language studies, while also pioneering the incorporation of automation and emerging digital printing technologies that enabled it to publish seminal volumes on rare and understudied topics that had previously been considered unprofitable.

Gorgias Press's founding principle of "publishing in the name of knowledge" rather than for profit, has continued to attract new authors, with the publisher's fields of academic interest expanding quickly in recent years. Today, the American press releases roughly 60 new titles per year, including monographs, edited volumes, translations, and more, with its books featured in prestigious academic collections around the world. Nevertheless, despite its institutional growth, Gorgias Press has retained its original founding vision: to be a publisher for researchers, run by researchers, first and foremost. In recognition of its publishing activities, in 2019 Gorgias Press became a publishing partner of DeGruyter Brill, which will also be present in Bucharest from August 3rd to 7th, 2026.

The Gorgias Press booth at the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies will allow participants to the event arriving from outside the field of academic Christian studies to familiarize themselves with the Congress's main themes, exemplified by the selection of volumes from Gorgias Press's extensive catalogue present at the Symposium Syriacum 2026 in Bucharest.
