Emil Constantinescu awards the “Václav Havel” International Prize for Creative Dissent to journalist Marina Ovsyannikova
Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, one of this year’s laureates, protested against the war in Ukraine on a live newscast of state-run television station Channel 1.
”I supported Ms. Ovsianikova’s bid through the judge panel debates precisely because I know how hard it really is to speak the truth when facing an oppressive regime. During the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the first detainees released were the imprisoned journalists, sentenced to rot for having protested against the Ceausescu dictatorship. And to those that might still be asking themselves: “What did Marina ultimately change through her symbolic gesture live on Russian State television in Moscow?”, I will answer in Vaclav Havel’s own words: “Hope is not the conviction that things will take a turn for the better, but rather the conviction that what you are doing makes sense regardless of the turn things take, for better or worse””, president Constantinescu stated during the ceremony.

SOLIDARITY WITH UKRAINIAN ACADEMIA
The Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization condemns the invasion of Ukraine, calls for an increase in the support offered refugees, and stands in solidarity with those within the Russian Federation protesting the ongoing war
Romania shares the longest border with Ukraine among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Romanians have lived through their own historical suffering, and we cannot remain indifferent to the plight now experienced by the Ukrainian people. It is time to show solidarity with the refugees arriving in our country and support those continuing to fight in Ukraine. We salute the decision of the Romanian authorities of harbouring students and professors from Ukraine, and we are launching an appeal to intensify cooperation with the academic environment in our neighbouring country. At the same time, we stand in solidarity with those that are currently facing repression in Russia, by protesting the ongoing war.

It is with deep sadness that I received the news of the passing of Academician Ionel Haiduc, President of the Romanian Academy from 2006 to 2014 and one of the great figures of contemporary Romanian science.
We have lost an exceptional scholar, a professor dedicated to training generations of researchers, a prestigious representative of the Romanian school of chemistry, and a man who well understood that the value of science is measured not only by the achievements of research, but also by its capacity to contribute to the development of society.
I was delighted to rediscover his undimmed dedication to knowledge and to the fundamental institutions of Romanian culture and science, throughout our extensive collaborations during his service as a member of the Scientific Council of the Levant Institute of Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace.
At this time of farewell, I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Academician Ionel Haiduc, as well to his colleagues and to all those who have held him in the highest regard.
May God rest his soul!

Every year, on September 21st, humanity celebrates the International Day of Peace. For the Levant Institute of Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace, this is not just another date, but one of the fundamental reasons behind the Institute’s establishment.
In 2011, Emil Constantinescu launched the idea of the Levant Initiative for Global Peace at the Academy of Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin: a project proposing an alternative way of viewing relations between people, communities and states through knowledge and understanding of the Other, intercultural and interfaith dialogue, and cultural diplomacy. This Initiative was subsequently presented in numerous international forums, from the United Nations and UNESCO to European institutions and forums dedicated to peace, underpinning the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization that, this summer, pursuant to the adoption of a new law by the Romanian Parliament, became the Levant Institute of Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace.

On 16 September 2026, the Institute for Faith-Based Diplomacy (United States), in partnership with the Levant Institute for Advanced Studies in the Culture of Peace, organized a roundtable discussion titled ‘Building Bridges of Hope and Reconciliation in the Middle East’ in the ‘Dimitrie Cantemir’ Hall of the Romanian Senate. The event brought together Members of the Romanian Parliament, notable academics, representatives of religious communities and of youth organisations to lay the foundations for developing faith-based strategies aimed at reconciling divided communities across the Middle East. In particular, the discussions focused on the need to foster mutual trust, forbearance and cultural tolerance in order to arrive at sustainable solutions within a geopolitical landscape renowned for its instability.

The Levant Institute of Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace, in partnership with the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin and the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bucharest, is organizing the sixth edition of the Annual Interdisciplinary School of Ancient Greek, Egyptology, and Oriental Languages from August 31 to September 5, 2026.
True to his vocation to transmit a global understanding of the historical processes, mentalities and power representations that underpinned these civilisations’ evolution over seven millenia of challenging dynamics – essential elements for the modern identification of solutions for peaceful coexistence, collaboration and development, the Levant Institute supports through this event the knowledge and the transmission of the source languages and of modern methodologies by which to approach them, and also the promotion of the Classical and Oriental languages in the Romanian academic milieu.

At the closing ceremony of the World Congress of Syriac Studies and the International Conference on Christian Arabic Studies, Emilia Iovan, Director General of the Union of Students of Bucharest – ACT, announced the organization's accession to the "Culture of Peace through Education" initiative, promoted by Professor Emeritus Emil Constantinescu, President of the Levant Institute for Advanced Studies in the Culture of Peace.

On the fourth day of the World Congress of Syriac Studies and the International Conference on Christian Arabic Studies (Palace of Parliament, August 3rd – 7th, 2026), in the presence of Emeritus Professor Emil Constantinescu, President of the Levant Institute of Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace, and of His Holiness, Mar Awa III, Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, the 400 participants from 33 countries and 176 renowned global universities were treated to a moving evening at the Saint Thecla Complex – an impressive religious, social and community complex finalized only this spring in Bucharest.
