One of the most prestigious international publishers of academic literature, De Gruyter Brill, has confirmed its participation in the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies that the Institute of Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization, in partnership with the Romanian Academy and the Romanian Parliament, is organizing at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest from August 3rd to 7th, 2026.
Founded in the university city of Leiden in 1683, during the golden age of Dutch history and culture, De Gruyter Brill has a rich publishing tradition which, over the centuries, has included the publication of the “Dictionnaire Historique et Critique” by Pierre Bayle (1697), a seminal work of intellectual skepticism that influenced the later reflections of great thinkers of the Enlightenment, such as Voltaire, David Hume or Thomas Jefferson.
Its publishing history also includes the publication of the Coptic Nag Hammadi manuscripts, under the auspices of UNESCO, in 1978 - an editorial effort that made a decisive contribution to the emergence of Coptic studies as a global academic discipline. De Gruyter Brill also publishes numerous reference works for its fields of academic interest, which range from the humanities to international law, offering institutional libraries and researchers a broad range of high-quality academic literature.
The participation of De Gruyter Brill in the proceedings of the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies will allow both its participants and the interested public to familiarize themselves with the publications of this internationally renowned European publishing house at the publisher's booth, which will be open for the entire duration of the event.
