Brepols Publishers at the 2026 Symposium Syriacum

Another internationally renowned academic publisher, Brepols, joins the proceedings of the 14th The World Congress of Syriac Studies, organized under the auspices of the Romanian Parliament by the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization in partnership with the Romanian Academy and the Romanian Foundation for Democracy from August 3rd–7th, 2026 at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.

One of the world's largest printing houses, Brepols Publishers was founded in 1795 in the city of Turnhout, Belgium, and became one of the city's main economic drivers in the centuries that followed. Since then, Brepols has significantly expanded its activities, becoming a prestigious international academic publisher primarily focused on works in the humanities, with a particular emphasis on the fields of history, archaeology, art history, linguistics and literary studies.

At the same time, Brepols has also specialized in publishing critical editions of primary source materials for its fields of expertise (histories, chronicles, historical manuscripts) under the highest typographical standards, earning a well-deserved reputation in academic circles as the leading international publisher of critical editions of patristic works in Greek and Latin written during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages as part of the Corpus Christianorum series, launched in the 1950s and conceived as an essential bibliographic resource for researchers worldwide.

The main series of volumes included in the Corpus Christianorum comprise the Series Graeca (CCSG), the Series Latina (CCSL), and the Continuatio Mediævalis (CCCM), supplemented by the smaller series of the Series Apocryphorum (CCSA, dedicated to apocryphal works), the Autographa Medii Ævi (CCAMA, dedicated to palaeographers specializing in the Middle Ages), as well as Conciliorum Oecumenicorum Generaliumque Decreta (COGD), which presents ecclesiastical documents recorded during religious and ecumenical meetings and councils held across the Christian world, from the Proceedings of the Council of Nicaea in 325 until present.

The extensive editorial efforts of Brepols Publishers are further supported by the publication of supplementary materials to the critical editions, including study guides, bibliographies, monographs and electronic databases that facilitate the study of all aspects of these primary sources. The development of this latter set of tools is expected to gain momentum in coming years, increasingly involving the creation of online databases and electronic tools of the highest quality that will be made accessible to researchers anywhere in the world.

Participants in the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies will be able to explore the impressive publication catalogue of Brepols Publishers at the Belgian publisher's booth organised in Bucharest, which will be open for the duration of the event.
