For the Day of Open Doors, emeritus professor Dan Alexandru Grigorescu, Scientific Coordinator of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization, presented the programme “Dobrogea, Witness to the Millennial Civilizations of the Levant” to those visiting the Department for Nature, Culture and Society.
The programme demonstrates the connection with the cultural, social and natural space of the Levant, developing projects that support current directions in university education and research: fieldwork education, interdisciplinarity in scientific research, and the holistic approach to natural and cultural heritage as a source of sustainable regional development. These and further details were offered visitors in front of a series of panels presenting the activity of the professors, researchers and students at the “Ovidius” University of Constanța coordinated by Professor Dan Alexandru Grigorescu and partners from the Romanian Geological Institute, showcasing geological monuments, protected plant and animal species in Dobrogea, archaeological sites in relation to their source construction stone as well as the customs of the Turkish and Tatar ethnicities inhabiting Dobrogea. The presentations were supplemented by discussions of rock samples representative of Dobrogea’s geological structure, sourced from the collections of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization.
Both conferences and exhibitions are included among the public-oriented events of the “Dobrogea, Witness to the Millennial Civilizations of the Levant” programme. This year, an ample panel exhibition titled “The Natural and Cultural Heritage of Dobrogea” was presented at the National Geological Museum in Bucharest (May 5, 2025), the National History and Archaeology Museum of Constanța (July 10, 2025), and the “Ovidius” University of Constanța (October 10, 2025). The exhibition includes 55 panels, grouped into 5 thematic sections: Geological Heritage; Biological Heritage; Material Heritage; The Immaterial Heritage of the Ethnicities of Dobrogea; and Dual-Value Heritage – Natural and Cultural, the latter being an innovative category that highlights the confluences between nature and culture, adding value to the established concept of heritage.
The exhibition aims to be an expressive effort that emboldens the viewer to come to know and deign to visit some of the most interesting sites across Dobrogea, while also conveying a message to those authorities charged with administering these heritage values with a view towards their adequate protection and development.
