Bucharest Model NATO, one year on from the outbreak of war in Ukraine. President Emil Constantinescu: “The world is experiencing a moment of rupture.”

For three days between February 17th and 20th, at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, high school delegates from across Romania endeavoured to engage in a simulation of the work carried out by the North Atlantic Alliance bodies. The “Bucharest Model NATO” event, already on its thirteenth iteration, aims to familiarise the younger generation with NATO’s negotiation mechanisms and decision-making processes. In these simulations, students have the opportunity to meet politicians and diplomats during mentoring sessions, and then apply the knowledge gained in the broader debate sessions. On this occasion, President Emil Constantinescu was invited to attend and address the event’s closing session.

The topics of this year’s event were the development of NATO’s combat capability; The UN’s 2030 Agenda; defending the sovereignty of states outside NATO’s borders; developing strategic partnerships to strengthen stability and reinforce NATO’s Eastern Flank, as well as ways to combat new and emerging security threats.

President Emil Constantinescu congratulated the participants for their tenacity in organising such an event, and answered their numerous questions. He stated: “I encourage you to follow down this path and prepare yourselves, because there is a great need for young, well-prepared people be they leaders or citizens. This is not easy; because, now, humanity is experiencing a moment of rupture. In moments such as these, you, the youth, are forced to make decisions. Firstly, for yourselves: how will you organise your lives? And how can you contribute to changing the world? You must examine the state of affairs together, and jointly eliminate utopian solutions, which are dangerous. You must also think for yourselves, and reject the dangers of populism.”

At the close of the event, President Constantinescu handed out “ambassador” diplomas to those participants who had attended a minimum of three Model NATO editions.
