“War is the father of all things,” proclaimed Heraclitus of Ephesus in the late 6th century BC. The main aim of the present conference is to explore how relevant the above statement is with regard to the field of prehistoric and ancient textiles. Although we should not expect a clear answer from such a new interdisciplinary branch of study, a closer examination of several key questions may lead us to a better overall approximation of the influence that war exerted over the production, procurement and consumption of textiles over the millennia. What effects did military needs have on the social and economic systems of textile production and procurement? Did military developments trigger technical innovations in textile production? Did wars and conquests change textile consumption habits?
While the answers to these questions are likely to shed new light on the history and archeology of textiles in Europe and the Mediterranean, they will also contribute to one of the most neglected aspects of military logistics and technology in the study of prehistory and Antiquity, which still lags behind the study of food products, metal objects and military payment.
Therefore, we hope to bring together researchers with experience in the field of textiles as well as in the field of war, in order to deepen the understanding of both fields through a combined approach.
