From New Delhi to Bucharest: an homage to Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen, an innovator of economic science

The personality and activity of Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen were evoked on the 24th of October 2019 by Dr Rajendra K. Pachaouri PhD, a disciple of the famous scientist, in a landmark teleconference streamed from New Delhi to Bucharest.

Dr Pachaouri came up with the initiative of this event in order to commemorate 25 years from the passing of Georgescu-Roegen, underlining the great academic’s impact in the configuration of modern economic theory and science.

Dr Rajendra Pachaouri is the President of the Institute for Energy and Resources in New Delhi, Chairman of the Inter-Governmental Panel for Climate Change at the United Nations, and a veritable ambassador of his mentor, Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen’s innovative ideas.

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization (ISACCL) took up Dr Pachaouri’s initiative, linking the classical notions of mathematical statistics and economics to everyday events, arguing that these notions cannot remain static even within the field, but that they must rather remain dynamic and adaptive to the changing needs of individuals in the context of economic development. In the words of Professor Emil Constantinescu, President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization, “The importance of Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen’s activity and innovations was highlighted by his nomination for a Nobel Prize, which he unfortunately was not awarded. Nevertheless, his impact on the economic sciences remains significant to this day, by his revitalization of economics through linking it to our brutal everyday reality. Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen demonstrated that empirical research is not only reserved for specialists, but can also be employed in all activities that we undertake as individuals”.
